There are some trends that I’ve seen that really just don’t do it for me. I’m pretty amazed, really, at how long some of these trends have been popular. Disclaimer: Anything I write on my blog is my personal opinion! I know not everything will be popular, but frankly, that’s inevitable. But I just think as we get older (as I like to say “evolve”), there are some trends that we really should put the brakes on.
Gymwear as casual wear. I honestly don’t know what is the fascination with women and leggings and/or yoga pants! I don’t find them comfortable at all. To me, they are basically tights without feet. They accentuate every curve of your body and let’s face it, not all bodies should be accentuated out in public. Most ladies pair these with baggy, shapeless tops, some type of sneaker and a baseball cap. How this is attractive I have no idea. But perhaps some ladies just don’t want to be attractive? They just want to be comfortable? I guess I’m old school. When I’m out in public, I may not be wearing designer clothes, but I want to look like I made some type of effort to present myself in public. One of the places you will never find me shopping is Lulu Lemon and Athleta (am I even spelling these right?!) To me, it’s just a sloppy, messy look unless you are going to the gym, to your mailbox or lounging around at home.
Tie-dye. I’m just not a fan of clothes that look like they were mistakenly splattered with bleach.
Logo handbags. Any bag that is filled with a logo is just a big No. It could be Coach, Gucci, Louis Vuitton. I was so close to buying the Louis Vuitton Neverfull, but then I realized that EVERYBODY has this bag! It is as common now as the Kate Spade boxy “Sam” bag was in the 1990’s. Remember it was the “It” bag to have? My goal now is to invest in handbags that have staying power and can transition easily from casual style to dress up (hint: can’t wait to share my finds from The Real Real!) without necessarily advertising the brand in such a flashy way. As I read somewhere, don’t be a Basic Betty. If everyone else has the bag, how are you different?
Mermaid hair. Unless you are a teenager, what is with the long, spiral, tendril hair that curls down to your breast? This look is just not attractive on most women. It’s just TOO MUCH HAIR and is obviously so fake. Lose the extensions ladies, your hair will thank you! Disclaimer! Temporary clip in extensions are a fun way to change your look as long as you keep the rest of your style elegant and classy. For example, long hair with sky high heels and a bandage dress…huge NO!
Rompers. Again, unless you are in high school, please do not wear these. Just…no.
Shorts and cropped pants. Unless you are wearing these with heels, they just don’t work. I’m sorry, they make your legs look stumpy. I don’t even think I own shorts unless they are the type to lounge around the house (e.g. fleece shorts). As far as cropped pants, they are just so 1990’s. Not a fan at all. For summer, I would much rather wear a maxi dress or jeans with a flowy top. To me, it just looks more stylish and elegant.
Overly long nails. Nails with designs and/or rhinestones or excessively long nails are just tacky, unsanitary and unsightly. You can’t be taken seriously if you have nails that look like weapons. Ghetto chic just isn’t chic.
Skin tight/body revealing clothes. Bandage dresses, low cut tops, skin tight jeans, letting your undergarments show through clothes, Daisy Duke shorts…not classy ladies!
Wow, this is a long list! I probably can go on, but I’ll save that for another post! My point after all of this is: before I go anywhere, when I’m dressing up, I ask myself, what message am I sending with this outfit? How do I want people to perceive me? If I meet someone for the first time, what impression will I be giving them? What does my look say about me? You are your own brand. You represent YOU. Make it memorable in a way that reflects only the best about you!
XO, Char
